As a fossil material and 100% natural, our Diatomite is a product suitable for all organic gardening applications.
Diatomite retains water as well as providing silica and other minerals to plants. These characteristics make it a great soil conditioner. Extra fine and fine diatomite will help to break up heavy, clay based soils, as well as retain moisture in light or sandy soils. Experimentation will tell you what quantities to use in your particular situation.
Just a few suggested applications and uses:
As a top dressing, the dust or extra fine also helps to control snails and slugs while providing silica to the plants, shrubs or trees.
In the vegetable or flower garden, add a handful of extra fine or fine diatomite to the hole for transplants or into seed rows.
For transplanting trees and shrubs, several quarts of extra fine or fine diatomite should be mixed into the bottom of the hole. A top dressing around the plant will also be helpful.
Rose bushes respond especially well when diatomite is added to the hole upon planting or top-dressed around established plants.
Medium and large diatomite can be used, as stone mulch and will also provide some thermal insulation during hot, sunny weather especially to recent transplants. |
